Free Christmas Ornament

EDIT: Sorry folks, this one turned out to be a fake…

If I had myself a Hanukkah bush at my apartment, I might find a use for this free Christmas ornament that comes with the Mountain Travel Sobek catalogs… Though, the trips that the catalogs suggest are pretty nice too…

Now all I need to do is find a place to put a glass ornament that two cats can’t get at it…

Thanks for this! The ornament looks pretty cool.

It said that your “catalog” is on its way? Does that mean I am getting a catalog or a ornament? It didnt mention anything about a ornament!

Hi Joelle- If you go back to the link and look at it, right above the catalogs is a picture of the ornament and a check box. Thankfully, the box is already checked, so you have no worries about receiving the ornament… As long as their supplies last, that is…

hmm…. I think Its going to give you a catalog as well. No worries.

Hey Adam - not to be a thorn, but when you go to their site http://www.mtsobek.com/catalog/ the ornament isn’t on the page…spam alert??
Also, Christmas is spelled wrong, which is rather strange.
And, the ornament looks to be a Ghirardelli Christmas ornament filled with chocolates (I got one last year from my secret santa at work), so why wouldn’t the site say “sign up for our catalog and get a free Ghirardelli Christmas ornament” ?? I am amazed at the great lengths that spammers go to get info…I hope they’re not using a legit site to do this!

Yeah, I think I’ll skip this one too. Looks kinda fishy.

That’s interesting, Baylee… I didn’t see that. But after poking around a little? You’re right. It looks like this one was actually spam. I’ve removed the link from it.

They copied over the whois records exactly from the original site, and just changed the e-mail contact information. That was a real tricky one and didn’t even think that there’d be another site because everything on the site looked very legitimate. Very good catch, thanks!

OMG!!!! I did not see that and I went and find it out. Is there something that I need to do now? That scares me. I do not need any problems. I love getting anything for free and love this website. I guess I need to be more careful.

OOPS!!! I can not spell tonight. I meant to say “filled it out”.

You’re welcome, Adam. I guess these spammers really think they’re quite clever…too bad they can’t use their brains to help the environment or some other worthwhile cause!!!

uh oh…i didnt realize that either…I got watch out for the spammers too!!

Usually, I’m pretty good at spotting these things. However, I’ve signed up for so many freebies lately, that I just automatically put my info in and don’t even think about it. I hate it when people do stuff like this.

So…….what’s gonna happen to those of us that filled out the form before we realized it was not really a free ornament?

  14. #14 Cassandra |

I don’t know…but I entered all my information, when I thought there was a real free Christmas Ornament. People will do anything to get your information. Only God knows what they’re going to do with our information, name, address, email address. Gosh, I will never fall for another one on here!

  15. #15 Cassandra |

By the way, I did e-mail the real web-sites webmaster, and it is confirmed that is a ‘bogus site’ as she put it. And, they’re working on shutting it down!

  16. #16 anon |

I hope you didn’t use your real e-mail address !

  17. #17 anon |

    Probably Identity theft !

  18. #18 Adam |

    Hey folks,

First of all, don’t worry about it being a spam or phishing site. While yes, you did give them your e-mail and address, we already probably get a fair amount of junk mail from all of the freebie offers we do, so you’re not going to see an increase or problem with it.

Second, there won’t be identity theft at all because, well, while you gave them all of that information, there’s no social security number or credit card number attached to the deal. So all of that being said, its nothing to worry about.

Finally, again, just don’t worry about it. Think of all of the freebies that we sign up for that just never come. Many of those could be exactly the same as this, except this one was sadly obvious in the end. Nothing bad is going to happen, the world will still revolve, and we’ll just look a little more carefully next time before we get stuff out… Its part of the risk we take with any freebie we post, and we do all we can. This time, though, one just slipped a little further through than others.

i don’t think any harm will come of it either. its just a shame that there are people out there that have no qualms about setting up such things. as far as identity theft goes you take a bigger risk going out to dinner and using your credit card………

    Hey Adam,

I just wanted to applause you for your down to earth response. Somtimes we need to relax and and not stress over such little things. If you want something free sometimes there are a few problems but move on be happy and enjoy. Since I heard about this website I have free popcorn, laundry soap, shampoo, breakfast bar, a calander and if i get to stressed out I have the heartburn freebie. Thanks for all the good stuff!!!
PS a response to Willow…… my identity was stolen thru my morgage company so I agree there are bigger risks……..
