Instore: Home Depot Workshops

Tomorrow is the first Saturday of the month, meaning Home Depot will be holding it’s monthly free Kids workshop. This month it looks like they’ll be building a wheelbarrow, which is just in time for putting them to work weeding the garden this summer!

The workshop is available to kids 5-12 and runs from 9am-noon. Call your local store to reserve a space.

I take my children to Lowe’s workshops. They usually have two a month or every other week. In the winter, it seemed like only once a month.

    Good times!

I’ve been trying to set up a woodshop for my kids in my big shed. I didn’t realize Lowes and Home Depot were doing free workshops every month for the kiddos. Tomorrow’s project at Home Depot is a little wheelbarrow, according to the site and it looks like just the sort of thing I had planned on doing with them in our shed. I am really looking forward to taking them out there.

I see it is for ages 5-12. I have four kids and the youngest is four. I hope they’ll bend the rules a little for him. He often feels left out these days. Oh, the hardships of being the youngest bugger of the bunch!

Thanks for posting this one, Goob! Between this and the free comic book day, tomorrow is looking like it will be a really good day for the rugrats! :)

But what if I want to learn how to make a wheelbarrow & don’t have any spare kiddos lying around? :pout:

My son had a ball the home depot in panama city FL had bird houses, tool boxes, and wheelbarrows to put flower pots in for mothers day

Mel, I’m jealous. There were no choices at our location, just the wheelbarrow announced on their site. It came with a little pot that sits in the barrow and “Happy Mother’s Day” stickers.

Riki, it’s just a little kit with pieces and the kids get to hammer the nails in. I wonder if they sell the kits somewhere. You could always join “Big Brothers, Big Sisters” and mentor a kiddo that you can take on the first Saturday every month! ^_^

FYI, when you get there, the kids are each handed an orange Home Depot apron and a kit. The parent gets to do the kit with the kid, nobody really shows you how to do it. The instructions are in English on one side and Spanish on the other and the pictures are very clear for those kiddos that can follow the steps but don’t read so well. My two oldest kiddos (7 and 8) were able to complete the kit almost by themselves with only a little assistance and my younger two (4 and 6) had to take turns waiting for mommy help.

The pieces are all pre-cut and have starter holes to help the kiddos locate where the nails go. When the kids are finished, they get a certificate and a pin to put on their work apron.

I found it interesting that the kits clearly state to use eye protection, but none of the Home Depots around here carry child-sized safety gear. I believe in better safe than sorry, so I’ll be ordering some child-sized goggles before the next workshop. I know there are a few sites that offer them, but the only one that comes to mind right off the top of my head is forsmallhands.com that carries child-sized tools and safety gear.

Thanks, again, Goob! My kids had a blast. They’re still saying, “thank you!” for taking them. :D

I thought I would add some info about the Lowes clinic I just signed up for:

Lowes requires that you sign up for their clinics. They are having a kid clinic next weekend (May 9, 10:00-11:00). When you sign up on their site they post in red letters that the first 50 children that have signed up and show up at 10:00 will receive the kit, an apron, and goggles.

Kudos to Lowes for including the goggles, but I foresee disappointed kids if you show up after the first 50. I don’t know if it would do any good, but you might call your local store to see how many have signed up for it before dragging your hindquarters and the kiddos over there Saturday morning.
