I’ve gotten several subscriptions from these people over the last 6 months – and other than a few emails ( like maybe 6 total? ) there is no catch.

Nope, no catch. They only give out a limited number of free subscriptions though instead of giving out thousands. It’s on a first come, first serve basis.
