Quick Poll on Links

I’ve gotten a few e-mails recently about links opening in a new window and so I thought I’d see what the general consensus was.

Currently, links to freebie sites open in the same window. They can be set to open in a new window / tab, but that setting would then take away the option from you.

As most webmasters see it, users should have almost total control over their own surfing habits. Site shouldn’t force a link to open in a new window, but instead let users have the option. For instance, I enjoy links opening in new tabs and I do this by using the scroll wheel on my mouse. Most people don’t realize that the scroll wheel is also a button and by using it to click a link in Firefox, it’ll automatically open the link in a new tab. I don’t know if this works with IE or Chrome, but I’d suspect that it does.

There is also another method, which is to right-click on any link and select “open link in a new tab/window.” This is clearly more ineffective, but research shows it’s the most popular. *insert picture of me scratching my head.*

However, the more I think about it, the more keen I am to opening freebie links in a new tab for HIF. Most sites don’t have nearly as many links as we do, thanks to the nature of posting freebies. Chime in by voting / commenting and letting me know how you feel about it!

My middle button doesn't work. Oh well--thought you taught me something new.

Goob, I would learn Chinese if I had to just to read your humorous remarks every day! However, I agree with #36 on this one, keep it simple.

I hate websites that end up opening 5 new windows to get where you are trying to go. One window is more than enough. I hope the "leave things as they are" wins.

Okay, so the question was "What would you like to happen when you click on a link?" Did anybody else click "other" and type in "Have it clean my house & wash the windows?" By the way a big thanks for the right click & the "wheely thing in the middle" hints! I've been on the internet forever & never knew about those!

Personally, I prefer links that open in a new window. For me, it just make it easier to navigate. I really, really, really dislike websites that keep you in the same window when following a link....I really don't see what the purpose of that is.

Middle-click FTW. Used to Ctrl+click before the middle click opened in a new tab. If you click the left and right mouse button, it simulates a middle-click, notebook users. :D Also Ctrl+click will still do it, and Middle-click works on the new IE's.

thanks for the 'using the scroll wheel button to open a new tab' I'm a firefox user and never knew that. quite helpful tip.

For those of us on laptops that don't have the middle button, Id much rather it open in a new tab when I click on it...

Some of your visitors are not technically savvy as these young folks. It would be nice if you would keep us in mind by just letting us click on a link and a new explorer would open. It would sure help us out!

leave it the way it is we like it that way

If it ain't broken - don't fix it - and HIF ain't broken!

Clicking the scroll button works on google chrome also.

I never knew about the right click and open in new window option until recently, also. Just goes to show that you never stop learning, huh? Goob, this site rocks as it is and I don't need you to change a thing! This is absolutely the best site on the internet in my opinion. Keep up the great work.

Count me as another who didn't know about the scroll button option. Cool! I do wish, though, that the links automatically opened in a new tab. I think that every time I click because I forget to do the other tricks to open them in a new tab. (Most of the other sites I visit have links open in a new tab.)

I always press the scroll button to open a new tab...so even if things were changed here, I would probably still do it anyhow out of habit...thanks for the great newsletter =0

I like the new tab auto feature. It's so much easier than pressing extra buttons (since Macbooks have only one button on the mouse and no scrolling wheel, but hey our two fingered scroll is way cooler than what your pcs do!)

I usually right click and open in a new tab (which is pretty quick for me), had no idea (nor had I ever looked or wondered about another way) that the scroll would do that! Thanks for the tip!!

The middle wheel click to open a page in a new tab totally rocks! I would always right click and select new tab...Thanks So much for the info! You Rock!

I had no idea about the middle clicker thinger. That is AWESOME! You should charge for lessons on that Goob ;-). And by the way clicking it does work in IE because I just did it. Just an FYI.

@April: On my laptop, if you right click and left click at the same time, it's the same as middle clicking.

I think you should just leave it the way it is.. BUT.. for me.. I just always open in a new tab, since i'm usually opening several things from this page in one visit, I want to keep HIF running in the background. (I hold down the CTRL button and click a link to open a new tab... that's just me!)

Goob you do a great job and shouldn't have to worry about this! You do all the work finding the free stuff, the last thing anyone should complain about is opening a new window, if they don't like it let them find the freebies themselves!

I'm glad I'm not the only one that didn't know about being able to click the rolling button.

Debbie, you have the best gravatar ever! Does your friend occasionally order free things?

I didn't know about clicking on the rolling button on the mouse to open a new link. Cool. I like to open a new window for links because it's easier whne all I have to do is click on the x to get back to the page I started with.

if it opens in another window I can very easily get back to HIF to get more goodies. I simply fill out the needed info , send and x out and on to the next great freebie. I love this as it saves me much time and head ache if a freebie like to roam I leave and come back to it later. Thanks guys you rock!!

I say leave this site the way it is! It's perfect!

Wow, I never knew about the scroll button thinger. Cool! Usually I just click on the link, and then later reclick on the HeyIt'sFree icon on my desktop to return to this site. Whatever you decide, it's still going to be easier for me now that I know about that scroll button thinger. THANKS!! :)

i don't think my laptop has a scroll button thinger to click so i right-click

I have always used the right click to open a new window, and prefer it that way.

I usually CTRL+click any hyperlink. That always opens the destination website in a new tab. This works for FireFox and IE. So I don't think you need to change anything. Thanks for the great website and emails. I hope it is working out for you as well!

Didn't know about the rolly button thingy trick, that's cool. I prefer things opening in new windows where there are more links to go back for. Otherwise I have to backstep to get back to where I was, and if I've followed links from the other site, it can be hard to get back to where I was. Maybe a little note now and again about the right click/rolly button click thing? Just think of the educational service you'd be providing!

orrrrrr if you have a mouse with the rollie button thingy inbetween the left and right buttons you could just click the link with that ;) and BLAM new tab/window, works everytime lol. [as stepen put it 'the middle button' lol]

Goob, like the folks who wrote before, I like the way it's been on your site - by the way, we've received so many great items from your postings - such fun going to the mail box! Like the way you've been running things - doesn't really make a difference to me though if the consensus has to get you to change, just like your site and the way I've been able to get to the page to complete for any offer available. Your sense of humor is so rare and unique and always makes us all laugh in the family - keep up the great job!

I usually use the middle button, but I'd prefer it to open in a new window or tab. Honestly, I'm so used to "middle buttoning" it, I'd probably keep doing it no matter what :P.

Middle mouse button rules the world - leave it the way it is, I say.

I only recently learned that you can right-click a link in order to open a new window....been on the internet for over 5 years and just now learning this *feels so ashamed* LOL But anyway Goob, I'd prefer it if you just keep things the way they are. Thanks and have a great weekend :-)
