When I was younger, there was no greater joy to me than when we went to a restaurant and there was that little sugar cubby. You know the one I’m talking about: sugar, Sweet-n-Low, Equal, Splenda, and whatever no-name other ones they have in there. It seems that there are so many alternatives to dump into your unsweetened iced tea to make it into sweet tea.
And seeing I grew up in the South, I know my sweet tea. You have to hot brew that sucker, then add to it the sugar as its still warm. When you’re done, you let it sit there nicely till its so sweet its viscous. So sweet that you taste the sugar after every bit of tea-type-goodness. That the tea is smoothened out by the sugar. And then, you feel that you have to spit when you’re done, just to get that little bit of sugar off of the tip of your tongue. But that spitting is also a sense of pride.
That’s why this whole free sample of NutraSweet Swirl doesn’t sit well with me. It’s a new kid on the block, and personally? Its not welcome. I’m already getting so old that I’m no longer drinking regular sweet tea, but having Splenda in my unsweetened tea to make it as close as I can, without the extra sugar I don’t need.
But uh, don’t tell that to any other Southerner… I might be forced to move above the Mason-Dixon line by a Confederate re-enactor by the barrel of his musket…
