So About That Cancer…

This awesome news was originally posted on November 24, 2011

Yep, that's a month of hair and a week of beard growth. And the eyebrows are back! I'm thankful for two out of those three.

I'm a private guy by nature. Heck, my sense of humor is a textbook case of having developed as a shielding mechanism. But it feels silly now that I ever debated keeping quiet on my health situation.

I was already in the middle of treatment when I wrote that post. I remember hitting publish then flopping over onto the bed for a smooth 10 hour nap. The next time I loaded HIF, the comment count had skyrocketed into the hundreds and I was shocked. I actually didn't read them. I didn't even look at them. I was terrified there'd be a heavy dose of negativity (I mean, we're talking about anonymous Internet comments here!) and I was already having enough trouble smiling.

The worst period of all occurred a week later when a perfect storm of side effects culminated. For three straight days, my dog and I lied in bed staring at one another, trying to will the other into venturing out to find food. I finally mustered the energy to get out of bed, but the kitchen felt light years away, so I sat down in front of my computer and loaded the comments.

You punks had me crying within minutes.

And that was it. That was the lowest I ever got and everything from there was an improvement. It sounds corny, but knowing I had thousands of complete strangers out there rooting for me was encouraging in a way I'd never thought possible.

Suddenly I wasn't fighting this damn thing alone! I knew my family and friends had my back, but I never expected in a million years that people I'd never met would care as well. Every corner of the globe seemed to have a vested interest in vanquishing my tumors. I got emails from Canada, India, Ireland, Australia, Japan, and countless others. HIF doesn't even post freebies for those countries!

I wasn't able to reply to everyone individually, but I read and appreciated each and every comment and email.

And I'm thrilled to say that I'm now officially in remission.

I've said it before and I'm sure I'll say it again, but thank you. Y'all were phenomenal to me throughout this and knowing that I didn't have to post freebies every day was a giant load off my back for a few months. So, again, thank you for the kind words and thoughts and prayers and love and every ounce of goodwill channeled in my direction! It made a huge difference and I'll never forget it.

Now go find some turkey, enjoy the day with family and friends, and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

I know I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but thanks for all the warm wishes over the past few days. I took a break from working over the holiday, but my phone kept blowing up with comment notifications on Thanksgiving. Not only did they put me in a extra good mood, but they kept extended family from constantly asking “so when are you going to stop playing on the computer and get a ‘real' job?” Seriously, trying to explain how a website works to somebody who still thinks email technology is on par with time travel is never fun. So thank you!

I had surgery last year and my long red hair started falling out. I tried everything, it’s coming back but still thin. That’s OK having less hair beat the heck out of being six feet under. I wish you and your Dog all the best. You CAN beat Cancer!!! All the best for you and your this Holiday Season 🙂

  27. Very happy you are back and on your feet. Not from cancer, but from another serious issue, I have been down where I thought i was done also. I don’t have my own website, but internet alone helped me, as I was just introduced to FB and it was great therapy to tell my story, and as you said have support, even if they weren’t there with me.
Remember, you are loved, for more than just your power to share freebies and save money. Even tho I use yoru site for both, you help me with my strength. I cannot work, therefore feel sometimes as I cant contribute to my family enough. I don’t earn money, BUT I was introduced to your site along with a few others by a very good friend. Couponing and freebies and saving money is not only my contribution to my family, but it is my therapy as well.
    SO thank you for everything.
Wonderful to hear about the remission, but even so, never feel you HAVE to post, if you are down, or low on energy, or just plain feeling blah–take a day off. People understand. You have a life, and sometimes it steers you away for awhile, whose life doesn’t do that to them?
Smiles to you! and THANKS AGAIN!

  29. Hey Goob, I’m an occasional visitor to the site and somehow must have missed the original post (which I read today) about your health. It’s so amazing to hear you are in remission and that the power of knowing you aren’t alone can have such an impact on one’s perspective. I don’t know you and am another stranger passing through but I wish you the best and many happy years to come. Its also a peaceful feeling for me to know that there are so many kind and compassionate people left out there that will stand by a complete stranger and be there for support so I stand along with them and support you and your triumphs in overcoming your cancer = ) Hope you have a WONDERFUL Holiday season and many more………..

  32. That is FANTASTIC!!!! Now you had ME crying…seriously, it doesn’t take much. I cry at that Folgers commercial where the brother comes home and the sister sticks a bow on him and says “you’re my Christmas present this year.”

I guess when people read something as opposed to just hearing it, it somehow resonates with us. Reading the words that someone took the time to write and the confession of cancer touched us all. Honestly, shouldn’t we be that way everyday, anyway?? I will continue to pray for you and as Becca stated (#468), hope your 2012 is HEALTHY and prosperous!

  33. It is weird to feel connected to anonymous people you don’t know, but when I first read your post about your cancer treatment, I was surprised at how much I cared! Even though I only know you from your lame jokes on the random freebies, I was still worried and hoped and wished you the best. I am so glad to hear that you are in remission. I’m sure it has been a long and tortuous journey, the depths of which I hope to never experience, but I am glad that you shared some of it with us, your hiffers. Hoping 2012 is healthy and prosperous for you!

  38. August 31 my heart stopped in my sleep. I am 30 years old. No cardiac history, no medications. I don’t smoke or drink. I run 5miles 3x a week. Healthy, happy mom of 2. I just died. I was lucky to have someone beside me who was awake, and knew what to do. Call 911, CPR. I am here today. Like you I know what it is like to stare death in the face. I spent 9 days in CCU, I have a pacemaker/defibrillator since no one can figure out why I died. I now live each and every day like it may be my last. After reading your story I am glad to know there are other people cheating death too. I may not have been cursed with cancer, but I feel we are in the same club. Tomorrow you will be here to post and I will be here to read. XOXO

I was sad when I read your first post about having cancer not just because of the news but because you had clearly been dealing with it for awhile already. No one should have to carry that burden on their own; we may be people on the internet you’ll never meet, but we *are* people, and we want to help you when you are going through tough times. We all have them, but I hope yours is now over for good. 🙂

  155. Love ya Goob! <3

Just wanted to share how you've help me:
I moved from the US to southern Europe exactly a year ago. To make a long story short, I was near destitute, living with other people, no job, no car, no home of my own, my mom sending me her last 20 bucks every other week or so. Since then I got a job and things have improved greatly. Having these freebies not only helped me save money (I have more 3 ounce bottles of body wash than I know what to do with!) but they gave me a little something to look forward too, as lame as that sounds. I had my mom send them to me when a bunch started piling up.

Sooooooo…thank you Goob. We're all with you.

  158. I really enjoyed reading this post. I just recently started getting the newsletter and I didn’t know about your cancer, so it was a pleasant surprise to read that today you are in remission. When I was in high school, my mom was diagnosed with cancer and I struggled to talk about it because I am also a very private person. I am now in college and I still don’t find it easy to talk about, but it is amazing how talking about it and knowing you have people who love and support you helps so much. My mom is also in remission and I am so thankful. I admire your strength and pray for continued healing. Thanks for sharing, it is definitely a happy Thanksgiving!

I have a friend who just had to have surgery for skin cancer (lymph node removal plus a good chunk of skin/muscle), and he wasn’t telling people either. I was the only one he told besides his wife. He just got word from his doctor a few days ago that he is now cancer free. Now he has started telling everyone what happened, and he is saying the same thing you did…”What took me so long to talk about it when everyone is being so wonderful and supportive?” I learned two days ago that my MIL now has breast cancer, and hopefully she can go into remission at some point as well. Cancer is such a terrible disease! Wishing you all the best. 🙂
