2026 Kids Summer Reading Freebies & Deals

The kid in green is regretting his choice of book, isn't he? 😅

Anyways, long as you count the back of cereal boxes, I'm quite the voracious reader. Haha, I actually read on average a book a week. If your children are anything like me, they might be interested in this list I compiled of free summer reading programs! I've been updating this list since 2014 and was pleasantly surprised at how many of the regular offers have returned this year!

Below are all of the 2026 summer reading freebies and deals for kids! Most follow the “read X books, get 1 free” model, but there are a few that differ. Hopefully your little one enjoys reading or at least getting freebies 🙂

In addition to the returning offers, I have marked brand new offers with NEW THIS YEAR!

Don't forget to come back for the MLB promos that are releasing in May! Every single organization that offered a summer reading program last year has brought it back again this year. Some of the best freebies include free tickets to Washington Nationals & Houston Astros games, free cash for kids in the Tampa area, and more!

I also have an idea I wanted to pass along. With some of these programs, you earn a free book off a list of available books. If your child reads this summer, but isn't interested in the freebies, consider donating them! School and public library are always desperate for books. Donating them to The Salvation Army or Goodwill is another possibility. Regardless, showing your child that freebies can be fun and helpful to others is a cool idea!

Finally, if you're still looking for additional summer reading resources, then I would start with this collection of summer reading information from the NEA.

Confirmed 2026 Summer Reading Freebies

Barnes & Noble – For kids in grades 1-6, get a free book after reading 8 books by filling out a Reading Journal. Then bring the completed journal to a Barnes & Noble store between July 1 and August 31, 2026 to get your free book from the provided list on the journal.

Chuck E. Cheese – They have a ton of methods for kids to earn freebies (located here), from good grades to sports achievements to reading in Spanish or English! This reading rewards calendar doesn't expire until December 31, 2026 and gets 10 free Play Points with any food purchase.

Department of Defense – The DOD offers a summer reading program for military families & children stationed worldwide. This year the theme is Plant a Seed, Read. In partnership with iREAD Summer Reading, library programs will include activities, graphics, crafts, reading lists, incentives, and much more for children, teens, and adults.

For more information, please contact your installation library (here's a full list with direct links!) or email them.

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library – If you have a local participating partner (use the link to search your area), then you your kids ages 1-5 can receive free books by mail every month! 😯

Half Price Books – Registration is now open for this one! Then starting on June 1, children 14 and under who read 300 minutes over June and July (that's only 5 mins/day) will earn $5 free Bookworm Bucks and a camp stickers sheet. There are also additional summer reading activities.

Teens can also earn HPB Bookworm Bucks by reading any of the listed titles and writing a short review.

H-E-B – I had trouble confirming this last year, so it's nice to see HEB jumping out early this year and letting us know it's back!

Texas children can take part in the H-E-Buddy summer reading club. They have to read 10 books and send in this form by September 30, 2026 in order to receive a H-E-B plush toy

Houston Astros – Reliant Readers – The Astros have brought this awesome deal back. Parents/guardians sign their children up between May 1-16 – so the registration window is tight! Then, starting on May 16, record reading minutes daily on behalf of their Student Reader until July 19. Then the top 1,000 Reliant Readers will qualify for 2 Astros home game tickets on August 1, 2026.

This is open to legal residents of the Greater Houston area of Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Harris, Galveston, Livery Montgomery, and Waller Counties who are of legal age of majority.

Los Angeles Dodgers – Reading Champions – Parents can register their children aged 5-14 and record their minutes spend reading. Every month young reading champions who have read at least 15-30 minutes per day will be entered into a drawing for Dodgers' prizes.

Unfortunately, this is only open to individuals who are legal residents of Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, or Ventura County in the State of California.

Mensa for Kids – The Mensa Foundation has created a Kids Excellence in Reading Program where children can earn a commemorative certificate and even an Excellence in Reading T-shirt!

There are different reading requirements based on grade level. One great perk is that in addition to reading, they will accept audiobooks and parents reading aloud to their children.

New York Times – This will be their 17th annual Summer Reading Contest. Every Friday from June 5 through August 14, any middle and high-school student can read one article in the NYT. Then, they can either submit a short written response or record a video up to 90 seconds to cover what they read and why they were interested in it.

At the end of the week, judges from the Times newsroom pick favorite responses and publish them here. Aside from broadening their horizon's and randomly posting some of the selected weekly responses, there doesn't look to be any “reason” to do this. Still, 15-year-old-Goob would have gone crazy over this offer so maybe there's a kindred Hiffer out there who would enjoy this.

Panda Express – This is aimed at entire classrooms for teachers to join. The program is recommended for elementary school students who are reading, typically grades Pre-K/TK – 5th grade (ages 5-11).

Teachers can enroll their class online in minutes and then Panda Express will deliver bookmark & rewards materials to distribute. Once students reach their reading goals of 5 books, they are rewards with a free kids meal coupon.

Pizza Hut – This classic program lets children pre-K through 6th grade earn a free personal pan single-topping pizza in exchange for meeting their parent-set reading golads during the months of June, July, and August.

Public Libraries – Be sure to check with your local libraries, as they often host multiple weekly, monthly, and seasonal events and reading competitions.

Tampa Bay Rays – Reading with the Rays – I don't have a lot of details for this year, but it says “check back Sunday, May 17 to download your game card and start earning fun prizes!”

For context of what to expect, last year Florida children read anything they desired and received free baseball prizes and $24 in cash!

Washington Nationals – All-Star Readers – The Nationals have partnered with library systems across the D.C. metro area to give fans who complete their local library's summer reading program up to two (2) free Upper Gallery tickets for a select 2026 regular season game!

The page says to check back at the beginning of June for more information.

Previous Summer Reading Deals Unconfirmed for 2026

The items below were summer reading deals during 2018-2025. If I find confirmation they'll return this year, I'll move them up above.

Books-A-Million – Read 4 books from their summer reading adventure list and write about each book on this logbook, then take the form in-store to get a free Dog Man backpack.

Scholastic – May 9 through September 12, kids can log their reading time online as part of the Scholastic Summer Reading ‘Home Base' Program. Over the course of 10 weeks, kids can unlock digital rewards as they complete weekly reading challenges; and access book excerpts, videos, and other summer-exclusive content. Home Base is moderated for safety 24/7.

Maintaining a reading streak will also unlock donations of 100,000 books from Scholastic to kids in rural America with limited or no access to books.

Seattle Seahawks – Summer Reading Challenge – The 2025 registration period opened in mid-summer last year, so perhaps that'll be the same again this year? By reading throughout summer and logging your minutes, you could win cool prizes and a reading visit at your PNW school.

Texas Rangers – Reading Club – Libraries in the DFW area have teamed up with the Rangers to reward summer reading club participants. Those who complete the requirements set by their local library will receive a promotional bookmark. Each bookmark contains a QR code that can be scanned to access discounted tickets in the Upper Box and Outfield Pavilion sections to one of our Summer Reading Night games in July and August.

Older Summer Reading Deals I'm Not Certain Will Return

American Girl – Select locations in large cities are being held for girls ages 8 and up. Kids get to decorate their own bookmark and summer reading log and can take home a doll-sized poster.

DOGOBooks – Ten participants who review the most books will be eligible to win a Prize Pack of seven books shown on the site. The next twenty-five participants with the most reviews will be eligible to win a $10 Gift Card.

LifeWay – Take your completed Summer Reading Journal to the register at your local LifeWay store to get one of nine books plus receive a free Bible, while supplies last.

Showcase Cinemas – Bookworm Wednesday rewards your little one with free admission to a select children's film when they present a book report. Accompanying parents or guardians and children under six years of age receive free admission and do not need to submit a book report!

SYNC – I hate to say that SYNC has officially ended after 14 year. This was a free program that offered audiobooks each week to teens at least 13 years old. Two audiobooks were available each week through the Sora reading app, but unfortunately they ended this program in 2024.

TD Bank – We can't forget the classic offer by TD Bank! For many years, kids in grades K-5 could read 10 books and get rewarded with cold, hard cash in the form of $10 added to their free savings account. The last time they ran this promo was in 2019 and then paused it during the 2020 covid summer. Sadly, it has yet to return, so I believe it has officially ended.

  1. Pizza Hut rewards the kids with free personal pan pizzas. It’s a great program that we have participated in for years now!

  2. Chuck E. Cheese has a reading calendar that will give each child who completes it an additional 10 tokens. You have to purchase food at the same time as getting the free tokens. They also have other rewards calendars – like for grades, brushing teeth, potty training, etc.

  3. I love freebies and summer reading programs. I’ve loved libraries (free) since I was a kid and I took home great piles of them every week. May I suggest that if you need to buy (don’t want take a borrowed book to the beach or you like to write in them or dog-ear the corners) a book this summer that you consider buying a book from a local independent bookstore. I’d hate to lose all our local bookstores because people only shop online. The best service is found at your local bookstore, too.

  4. FYI–check your local library too! Ours has “Read your way to the ballpark.” It has a sheet that lookes like the Candyland gameboard. There are prizes along the way and the final book gets you a ticket to the Arizona Diamondbacks game! (You get to read the books of your choice too, not a rquired reading list.)

  5. Why is it just for grades 1-6? My kids are teenagers and they read a ton of books so this would have been perfect if not for the age restriction.

  6. My kids do this every summer, and they love it. There is a long list of books to choose your free one from, so the only hard part is when they have to pick the one they want most. Also the books that they read don’t have to be purchased from B&N, they can be books from home or ?. And if you have a summer reading program at your local library, you can earn double credit by using library books and then listing them on both this promotion and the one from the library. Read a book, get credit in two different places. Cheating?, no… incentive to read?, yes!
