Free 2011 Federal Tax Return

EDIT: Obviously, you can’t get this offer any more since Tax Day has come and go!

Is it seriously tax time again? You’ve got to be kidding me. Oh well, at least both H&R Block and Turbo Tax are offering free federal tax returns. I’ve always used Turbo so I guess I’ll keep the streak alive for one more year.

I try not to be so apathetic when it comes to my finances, but one look at a W-2 and I’m instantly asleep. I don’t know how accountants do it. They’re honestly the closest we have to superheroes.

I have used H&R block online for 5 yrs now and it’s great! The office people are always willing to help for free as well when using the online version

You can use TurboTax Freedom edition for free state as well. Although you have to qualify.

Is it free for the rest of the tax season, or is there a time limit? I don’t want to put it off only to lose the opportunity!

Another thing to keep in mind, if you are a Vanguard mutual fund client, is that they are offering, at least in my case, a nice discount off Turbo Tax Deluxe. In stores, that version is around $49, for Vanguard clients $22.

The IRS will file your taxes for free for you through the VITA Program if you make under $49,000 a year. http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=107626,00.html

I have been filing taxes thru Turbo Tax (Freedom Edition) for atleast 5 years now. Files 1040EZ for federal and state and I’ve never had a problem. I got tired of paying someone to do my taxes each year when I could do it myself.

I usually use TurboTax, but this year it seems there isn’t really a free version. I chose “free” on the home page, di all my taxes, then was forced into paying, being told it was done with deluxe edition. I then deleted everything, and was sure to choose free again, and by the time I was done, I was again being charged for deluxe. Last year, the federal was free and the state cost me. this year the state is costing me, and free turns into “deluxe.”

I called our local H&R Block, they said the 1040EZ is free but you have to pay for federal, city, and school tax prep. My feelings on this is that they are incorporating the cost into someplace.
