It's been almost 15 years since I first published this On The Border birthday freebie. Previous years offered a free bowl of queso or brownie sundae, but it seems they've now moved to a pure discount off your check. At first glance, I thought this was a downgrade, but then I realized the $5 they give you can be spent on anything whereas the previous offer “forced” you to spend it on either a queso or sundae. So now you can either use your birthday $5 to get one of those items or put it towards something else you might prefer instead.
That said, after taking one look at their brownie sundae, that's certainly what I'll be getting for myself. As the famous philosopher Sir Reginald Goob once said, “a sugary treat in the hand is worth a trio in the oven.” In hindsight, he was kinda dumb.
